  1.                  DUPLICATE FILE LOCATOR PROGRAM Version 3.01

  3.  This group of files is the latest shareware version of DFL. The compressed 
  4.  file DFL301.ZIP should contain the following files:
  5.  
  6.     DFL301S.EXE  - The shareware program with self-contained help.
  7.     DFL.SAV      - The configuration file.
  8.     DFL.DOC      - The manual.
  9.     ORDER.DOC    - The program registration order form.
  10.     DFLREAD.ME   - This Readme file.

  12.  After reading these documents, the only files you should need to keep  are 
  13.  DFL.EXE & DFL.SAV. All the help information can be accessed on-line.  Over 
  14.  the  past few years, you won't believe the number of DOC/TXT/README  files 
  15.  I've  accumulated  ( or would you ? ) and had to keep around in  order  be 
  16.  able to use a program a month later.

  18.  Nevertheless,  the extended documentation manual is included as  the  file 
  19.  DFL.DOC.  It  contains  information and tips that  may  be  helpful  while 
  20.  running  this  newer, more complex program. The manual file  is  the  same 
  21.  manual  as  we provide with the REGISTERED version.  The  only  functional 
  22.  difference  between  this version and the registered version is  that  the 
  23.  registered  version has full support for all file archive systems  we  are 
  24.  aware of. Also, refrain from trashing ORDER.DOC until you have  thoroughly 
  25.  explored the program. Our support for registered users IS worth it.

  27.  With  this version of DFL we introduce Virtual Memory. By caching to  disk 
  28.  as  it processes, DFL can handle an 'unlimited' number of files.  Previous 
  29.  versions  scanned until they run out of memory at around 8000  files.  The 
  30.  internal  data structures used to capture the contents of the disk are  as 
  31.  small as can reasonably be expected. Depending on how many directories you 
  32.  have,  it is safe to assume that DFL will require about 40 bytes  of  disk 
  33.  space per file. Based on this, DFL should be able to handle  approximately 
  34.  25,000  files  for every megabyte of free disk space. Please  consult  the 
  35.  manual for a complete description of the Virtual Memory System.

  37.  Thanks to the Virtual Memory, DFL only requires 320K of memory to run. So, 
  38.  some  of  the  more  advanced functions that  require  spawning  to  other 
  39.  programs can now be performed.

  42.  Dos  Shell speaks for itself. The File Comparison program may be  used  by 
  43.  DFL  to  examine in detail the actual differences between any  two  files. 
  44.  And, by COMPLETE ARCHIVE SUPPORT, we mean:

  46.  - Archives  are  treated as regular directories. The  files  within  these 
  47.    directories can be manipulated in every way that normal files can.  This 
  48.    includes:

  50.       - Archived files can be deleted.
  51.       - Archived files can be viewed.
  52.       - Archived  files can be compared to other archived or normal  files, 
  53.         in   either  binary  (internal  comparison)  or   ascii   (external 
  54.         comparison  using  FC.EXE) regardless of the type  of  archives  in 
  55.         which they reside.
  56.       - Archived files can be tagged and group-deleted.
  57.       - Archived  files can be processed by every DFL Scan  Mode  including 
  58.         Name, Partial Name, Length or Content (Alias) regardless of archive 
  59.         type.

  65.  In addition to supporting archives, the other feature of DFL which we have 
  66.  not  found  in any other similar program is its ALIAS mode  of  operation. 
  67.  Using this mode, the contents of equal-length files, archived or not,  are 
  68.  compared  to identify duplicates. The file names play no role  whatsoever. 
  69.  For  example, this will allow the user to locate files such  as  PROGRAM.C 
  70.  and PROGRAM.BAK which have the same contents but different names. This may 
  71.  also  be of use to sysops who want to weed out duplicate uploads or  semi-
  72.  duplicate  archives  which contain the same files, but have a  comment  or 
  73.  something to hide the overall archive as a duplicate. Using alias mode,  I 
  74.  was able to free about 20megs of disk space on one my drives.

  76.  DFL will also find duplicate files by one of these other Modes:

  78.    Name     - DFL will find files with identical names. 
  79.    Length   - DFL will find files with equal lengths.
  80.    Name1-11 - DFL will find files with the first N matching name letters.

  82.  As  should  be  expected from any half way  interactive  system,  complete 
  83.  context sensitive help is available, as well as an extended online manual.  
  84.  The  idea   is  that,  as stated above, you  should  never  need  to  look 
  85.  elsewhere   for  assistance  while  running  the  program.  However,   for 
  86.  registered  users with archive support, there are some  situations  during 
  87.  the  initial definition of an archive format that can be a little  tricky. 
  88.  DFL  comes  with several predefined formats, but when adding one  of  your 
  89.  own, you may need to consult the more extensive manual or call us.

  91.  You  may use MicroSoft's EXEPACK.EXE utility to decrease YOUR copy of  the 
  92.  program  EXE by about 14k. We stopped packing the distributed  copy  after 
  93.  running across a cache program which rendered it inoperative. Please don't 
  94.  upload  EXEPACKed  copies, or for that matter, copies other  than  exactly 
  95.  what was downloaded or otherwise obtained.

  97.  DFL.EXE compresses very well (50-60%) with PKLITE, LZEXE and other similar 
  98.  executable compressors.
